Well, that was a surprise. Many of my close running friends know that Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji is a dream hundred miler for me. 2015 will be the fourth running of the race – and with a qualifier (Cascade Crest) under my belt, I’ve been seriously considering it. One of the only problems: The 2015 dates had not been announced, yet.
The 2013 and 2014 runnings of UTMF were in late April, so I’ve been expecting a similar date for 2015. When the date was announced yesterday, it turned out to be late September 2015. Having a LOOONG time limit to complete the race, the “date” is actually three days: September 25th through 27th, 2015. STY (Shizuoka to Yamanashi, the 50 mile race run on the course at the same time) will start on September 26th. From what I can tell, the biggest challenge around this date is that it’ll be in typhoon season (and a bit warmer than April – but probably not unreasonably hot).
I haven’t figured out much of my 2015 race calendar, yet (a key piece will be the results of the Western States 100 lottery in a few weeks). But if it can work out, I’d really like to make this part of my plan. Japan is a beautiful country and I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to run trails in the mountains outside Tokyo once before. I think it’d be an amazing cultural experience to travel there again and go on a hundred mile journey around Fuji-san.
